Description

Presented is an outstanding circa 1980 San Diego State University jersey worn and signed by Hall of Famer Tony Gwynn. This piece has the additional special provenance of originating directly from Gwynn himself through his baseball coach and directly to our consignor, who has kept it in his collection for more than forty years! This represents an extraordinary early–career artifact from one of baseball’s most iconic hitters. Designed with the bold red and black of SDSU athletics, the nylon jersey features the team's "AZTECS" moniker across the chest with Gwynn's number 28 on front and back. Gwynn has inscribed a message on the white horizontal band that reads "Andy, Thanks for everything!! Best Wishes, Tony Gwynn." The jersey exhibits light wear overall and remains in extraordinary condition. Originating as a personal gift from Gwynn, this represents a rare surviving example of his San Diego State playing attire, predating his Padres debut and capturing the earliest chapter of a legendary career. A museum-quality piece with impeccable provenance from “Mr. Padre” himself! Auction LOA from James Spence/JSA.
