A Mt. Rushmore president is up for consideration, with this Theodore Roosevelt typed letter signed. Consistently ranked among the top five greatest American presidents, Roosevelt enjoys a consensus of being fourth best to have held our top political office. Dated 3/15/1907 on White House stationery, while Roosevelt was in office, this correspondence is addressed to Mr. Roger L. Scaife, of Houghton, Mifflin and Company. In the content, the 26th President regretfully declined an offer to write a book, stating "It would, however, be out of the question for me even to think about writing such a book now.". Roosevelt (d.1919) concluded this letter with a firm, prominent fountain pen signature, which retains a good degree of integrity, well over a hundred years later. He also crossed out a word or two and wrote in the words "greatly like" in the opening sentence. This once folded letter reports in attractive state, with a look of great period authenticity.
