Treasure hunters, dig here for this 1899 $10 Liberty Head coin. Known colloquially as the "Eagle," $10 gold coins were circulated from 1795-1933, and in today's market they are greatly prized for their intrinsic beauty — and in investment circles, as a smart hedge against inflation. Their importance in the collecting realm is reliant on their relatively small production quantities, and the fact that the number still with us today is a small fraction of their original mintage. This 1899 date was struck at the Philadelphia Mint in a quantity of 1,262,219 pieces, and the estimated survival population is 32,500 in all grades. Made up of 90% gold and 10% copper, the $10 Liberty Head type has a weight of 16.7 grams. This attractive survivor has been encapsulated by NGC, with a favorable grade of MS62.
This coin is one of twelve NGC graded $10 Liberty Head gold coins in this auction. All twelve can be viewed in the Historical/Political/Pop Culture/Americana category.
