Go to the head of the class when you award yourself this Babe Ruth signed 1940 World's Fair Academy of Sport student attendance card. Most baseball fans are well aware of Ruth's great affection for kids, and he was a natural choice to serve as one of the professors at the Academy of Sport's World's Fair pavilion. Ruth has graced the offered student certification card with an absolutely stunning signature. Reportedly, Ruth donned a cap and gown to greet the Academy graduates during a October 1940 graduation ceremony.
Accompanying the card is an Academy of Sport certificate with golden laurel seal, dated October 16, 1940 and triple signed by New York World's Fair Director of Sports Christy Walsh, baseball instructor "Moose" McCormick, and football instructor Nello Falaschi. Considered the first sports agent, Walsh was the driving force behind this Academy, which was one of the most well-attended attractions of the 1939-1940 New York World's Fair, thanks to the many big name stars on the faculty.
Both the Ruth signed card and the Walsh signed certificate are made out to the same youth, Donald McCurry. Baseball's Centennial Anniversary coincided with the opening of the World's Fair in 1939 and countless souvenirs and mementos, including a wide array of baseball items, went home with the throngs of happy attendees. For dedicated collectors, this Ruth signed card is likely to be as good as it gets from this two-season event.
