Description

People were still looking for their seats when Muhammad Ali KO'd "Sonny" Liston in the first round of their second fight, where these (4) full tickets were issued. Staged at St. Dominic's Arena in the Civic Center at Lewistown, Maine, this infamous fight is remembered for the first round "Phantom Punch", which led to referee "Jersey Joe" Walcott stopping the fight at the 2:12 mark. This quick, easy win for Ali resulted in a major controversy over whether or not Liston had thrown the fight. After their first fight in 1964, the former Cassius Clay joined the Nation of Islam and changed his to Muhammad Ali, while Liston dealt with a legal problem. Theories behind a possible fix included pressure from the Mafia, and death threats by the Nation of Islam directed at Liston, along with other potential causes.
