Lot # 1335: Circa 1909 Shibe Park Original Stadium Seat

Well over 100 years old, this surviving stadium chair hails from the first steel-and-concrete ballpark, home to both the Philadelphia Athletics from 1909-1954, and the Phillies from 1938-1970. Shibe Park debuted in 1909, right before the A's "$100,000 Infield" would lead the squad on a dynastic run, that saw the A's win World Series championships in 1910, 1911 and 1913. Another A's dynasty arose in the late 1920s to early 1930s, when two more championships were witnessed from this fold-up style seat. The 1950 season saw the Phillies Whiz Kids host the Fall Classic is a series versus Joe DiMaggio and the New York Yankees, and the venerable venue was renamed Connie Mack Stadium in 1953, in honor of the longtime A's manager-owner. This ancient seat retains the original 7 slats and metal components, including the ornate, heart-shaped iron armrest design. Mounted on two boards for freestanding display, the 34" tall x 21" wide relic has been refurbished/repainted and bears a re-stenciled "1" in yellow on vibrant Phillies red. It does not appear that the chair could currently support the weight of an adult without some structural reinforcement.
