Description

Scientific hitter Rod Carew got some well-deserved recognition, when he received this 1977 The Sporting News Player of the Year Award. Employing as many as twelve different batting stances, Carew was a tactical master at the plate. The Zonian superstar finished his Hall of Fame career with a .328 lifetime batting average and seven AL batting titles. 1977 was a career year for Carew, as he set personal best marks for runs, hits, doubles, triples, home runs, RBI, batting average, and on-base percentage. This big season also saw Carew named the AL MVP. The engraved plate on the offered Sporting News award states in part, "His ability was so pronounced that little difficulty was encountered in making the selection". This 8-1/2" x 11" brass plate is mounted in framed display, measuring 13-1/2" x 15-1/2" overall. While moderate wear is evident, this fifty-year-old award retains abundant display appeal. Accompanying is a handsome copy of the October 15, 1977 edition of The Sporting News, with a front cover photograph of Carew and his family under the caption "Player of the Year Rod Carew".
