A total of (19) baseball luminaries who were gathered for the 1972 Hall of Fame induction ceremony, have contributed to the signing of the offered baseball. No factory labeling stamps are visible on this ball, and the surface has toned unevenly from a coating of shellac. Even so, the signatures are so potent that they show off proudly against the darkened surface. All but one of the signers are Hall of Fame members, including four inductees from the Class of ’72.
Featured are Hall of Famers, unless noted:
Sweet spot: Joe Medwick (d.1975);
North panel: Earle Combs (d.1976), Monte Irvin (d.2016), Ted Page (d.1984, note a Hall of Famer), Joe Cronin (d.1984);
South panel: Lou Boudreau (d.2001), Sandy Koufax (Class of 1972), “Lefty” Grove (d.1975);
East panel: “Casey” Stengel (d.1975), Jesse Haines (d.1970), “Buck” Leonard (Class of 1972, d.1997), “Lefty” Gomez (Class of 1972, d.1989), Harry Hooper (d.1974), Lloyd Waner (d.1982);
West panel: Warren Giles (d.1979), Luke Appling (d.1991), Waite Hoyt (d.1984), “Yogi” Berra (Class of 1972, d.2015).
