Description

The most legendary team in college football history, Notre Dame, has traditions that are almost a century and a half old. The 1888 image in this photo is indeed the first image of a “Fighting Irish” football team.

The 11x6 News Service photo, in Very Good condition, is stamped “Received Examiner's Reference Library NOV 9 1930” with clipping from newspaper it was used in attached to the back. It reads, “Notre Dame’s First Team – 1888. FORTY-TWO years ago, Notre Dame had its first football team - Eleven Men - that's all. No substitutes.” It goes on to list the players in the photo including Captain H.B. Luhn.

However, this team did play a few games at the end of 1887, and several of the players who played in those games were replaced by 1888 with other players in this photo. So, there is no photo of the 1887 version of the team.
