Description

Historically significant archival group of seven 1946-1951 Negro League official ephemera items, the majority of which relates to the Baltimore Elite Giants franchise. Includes: 1946 & 1948 Baltimore Elite Giants facts and figures sheets (with Joe Black), 1947 Bob Feller's All-Stars two-page press release (details Satchel Paige), (2) 1951 Western Union telegrams with one relating to the contractual status of Joe Black and James Gilliam (plus receipt). While the pages are quite fragile with varying degrees of storage wear (including paper separation and tape repair), they are intact, readable and an extremely valuable and interesting resource for Negro League historians. Note: This lot arrives from the Richard Powell collection. Mr. Powell was an instrumental figure in Negro League history and responsible for moving the Elite Giants franchise from Nashville to Baltimore prior to the 1938 season. He later served as the team's general manager, and under his tutelage, fielded a lineup of legends including Roy Campanella, Junior Gilliam and Joe Black.
