The wonders of the World came to Chicago in 1893, for public admiration at the Columbian Exhibition. Among the many marvelous things found at this “Chicago World’s Fair”, was the offered 1893 George Washingfton silk portrait. This international event was held in honor of the 400th Anniversary of Columbus’ first voyage of discovery to the Americas in 1492. A well-attended, long-running event, this exhibition yielded a host of keepsakes, and this Washington silk ranks as one of the more rare survivors. The perimeter is folded and pinned back 4” to 8” per side, and the visible obverse area is approximately 18” x 23”. Our first president is rendered in a stately engraving style portrait, with a facsimile of his signature below. Located on the bottom border, folded to the back, is the legend “Columbian Exhibition. Chicago. 1893,”. Sporadic staining is evident across the field area at top, though the bright, distinct image of the Founding Father is unmolested by this condition. As can expected the folded edges show age-appropriate wear, including small cracks, minor fraying, and moderate surface loss. These conditions would readily be concealed in framed display, and this majestic antique portrait presents handsomely, with a great period authentic look.
