Trace the Washington Commanders' roots, with this 1938 Washington Redskins team-signed sheet. Founded in 1932 as the Boston Braves, this storied franchise rebranded in 1933 as the Boston Redskins. Playing in a city renowned for higher education, the NFL Redskins took a backseat to locally revered college teams, such as Harvard, Boston College and Holy Cross. In 1937, the team was relocated south, as the Washington Redskins. Sammy Baugh was taken 6th in the 1937 NFL Draft, and promptly led the Redskins to an NFL championship in his rookie season. Dating from the franchise's second season in DC, this 1938 Redskins sheet is signed by (9) members of the defending world champions. Topping the list of signers is an adhered signature cut from Hall of Famer "Turk" Edwards (d.1973), who is considered a tougher acquisition. The rest of the subjects are Jim Barber (d.1998), Bill Young (d.1994), Frank Filchock (d.1994), Riley Smith (d.1999), Charlie Malone (d.1992), Tillie Manton (d.1991), Erny Pickert (d.1977), and Ed Justice (d.1991). All signatures show a pleasing degree of integrity, and identifying notations by a fan are noted across the top, right, and bottom of the page. Seen on the back of the offered sheet, are (4) entertainer signatures, including Edythe Wright (d.1965), who sang with the Tommy Dorsey band during the late-1930s.
