Description

There was just a four-year window to obtain Boston Redskins souvenirs firsthand, so naturally this team-issued 1934 Professional Football Rules leaflet is a scarce survivor. Founded as the Boston Braves in 1932, the NFL franchise was renamed the Boston Redskins a year later, and went by that name from 1932-1936. This period was followed by a relocation to Washington in 1937, where the team has since remained, and is now known as the Washington Commanders. Owner George Preston Marshall is said to have to have come up with the Redskins name in honor of his 1933-1934 head coach, William Henry "Lone Star" Dietz, who claimed to be a Native American of Sioux heritage. Dietz is seen on the front cover of this antique leaflet, which rates as FR. Seen on the back cover is a team photograph of the inaugural season 1932 Boston Braves, and a team photograph of the 1933 Boston Redskins with Dietz in the first row is located on an interior page, alongside the rules of engagement for NFL play.
