Description

At the close of a 45-year coaching career that witnessed four national championships and innumerable offensive innovations, College Football Hall of Famer Glenn (Pop) Warner had a final round of glory for the 1939 San Jose State Spartans football team. Having been coaxed out of retirement following the 1938 season, Warner was recruited as an "advisor" (offensive coordinator) for the Spartans and lead the squad to a perfect record while outscoring opponents by a 324-29 margin. To express their appreciation, San Jose State University awarded the legend this commemorative field blanket. Measuring nearly 71x58 dimensions, the offered virgin wool heirloom was manufactured by The Chicago Pennant Company and has survived the decades in phenomenal condition. SJSU's traditional purple and gold colors are carefully embroidered with the school's raised logo crowning a "Highest scoring collegiate team in the United States" declaration with "1939-324" and "Glenn Warner advisory coach" notations. The surface is remarkably clean and the vibrant yellow bordering is entirely unfrayed but displays several pin holes scattered around the perimeter. Our consignor's grandfather was a friend of Warner and was given this blanket as a gift. The size/weight of this item requires that there will be an additional shipping charge for this lot.
