Description

History was made when this Our Gang Comics #1 issue was published by Dell in 1942. This Golden Age gem saw the first comic book appearances of Our Gang, Barney Bear, the hilariously combative Tom and Jerry and others. Seen on the big screen in film shorts from 1922-1944, the Our Gang bunch was also known as The Little Rascals. First appearing during the silent film era, Our Gang broke some serious social ground, with white and black children fondly hanging together through thick and thin during the “Jim Crow” era. Anchored by Spanky at center, the multi-racial Gang is depicted on the front cover posing for a photograph by Barney Bear, who looks annoyed as Tom the cat climbs his back to get at his perpetual tormentor, Jerry the mouse. This wonderfully nostalgic first issue is encapsulated by PGX, with a favorable rating of VG+ 4.5, Off-White to White Pages. Credit for the artwork and stories goes to the great Walt Kelly.
