Description

After the National Basketball League (NBL) dissolved in 1904, organized basketball shifted toward regional play with local Athletic Clubs, YMCAs and Army Company teams forming the backbone of early competition. The most prominent team of the era was the Company E squad from Schenectady, NY, founded by Basketball Hall of Famer and early pioneer Ed Wachter.

Offered here is a rare, circa early 1900s, handbill promoting a basketball series between the Lauter Athletic Club of New Jersey and the Company D basketball team, also known as the Jersey City Lauter Athletic Club. Notable players at the time included Chief Mueller. Notably, the handbill features an image of Sitting Bull, a highly unusual and eye-catching inclusion for a basketball item.

Ephemera from this formative period in basketball history is exceedingly scarce. The piece is in Excellent condition with original folds.
