Description

Incredible historical context is examined, with this selection of (3) oversized 1940s-1960s scrapbooks. Loaded with publication clippings of Hall of Famers, this nostalgic collection is a true blast from the past.

“Massive” only begins to describe a 1940s-1960s Philadelphia Phillies scrapbook. This lovingly assembled keepsake contains well over two hundred pages, covered on both sides with three to eight clippings per side. Each and every single clipping is a game action photograph, with most bearing captions as well. Truly a comprehensive chronicle of three decades of Fightin’ Phils play, this magnificent oversized volume appears to be a custom creation. 15-1/2” x 22-1/2” lauan plywood boards serve as the front and back covers, held together by brass butterfly hinges, and a pair of bolts. Approximately two thousand newspaper clippings are expertly trimmed as neatly as possible, giving this scrapbook a highly professional appearance. The assembler obviously had a liking for sliding plays, as this theme is represented in great number.

The clippings are arranged in tabbed sections by opposing teams, with the Pirates, Cubs, Mets, Braves, Reds, Dodgers, Astros, Giants, and Cardinals. Many Hall of Famers are seen throughout, with frequent appearances by Willie Mays and Robert Clemente for the opposition, countered by Richie Ashburn and Dick Allen for the Phillies. Some of the many other Hall of Famers noted are Hank Aaron, Ernie Banks, Stan Musial, Robin Roberts, Jim Bunning, Bill Mazeroski, Ralph Kiner, Paul Waner, Al Lopez, Ron Santo, Billy Herman, Eddie Mathews, “Red” Schoendienst, Sandy Koufax, Orlando Cepeda, “Sparky” Anderson, Ernie Lombardi, and Frank Robinson.

Countless Phillies are pictured, with heavy emphasis on players from the 1950 “Whiz Kids” youth movement, and the infamous 1964 “Phold” squad, including Gran Hamner, Eddie Waitkus, Willie Jones, Curt Simmons, Andy Seminick, Stan Lopata, “Bubba” Church, Del Ennis, Mike Goliat, Hank Borowy, Eddie Pellagrini, Chris Short, Johnny Callison, Tony Taylor, Bobby Wine, “Cookie” Rojas, Tony Gonzalez, Ruben Amaro, Wes Covington, Art Mahaffey, and Clay Dalrymple.

Also appearing, are stars Pete Rose, Johnny Vander Meer, Dick Groat, Joe Garagiola, Eddie Stanky, Vince DiMaggio, Dick Stuart, Don Demeter, Roy Sievers, Gus Triandos, Marv Throneberry, Jim Hickman, Maury Wills, “Rusty” Staub, Don Zimmer, Joe Adcock, Morrie Aronovich, Danny Murtaugh, Ted Kluszewski, and many others.

Next up is a more traditional store-bought scrapbook, covering the magical 1959 “Go Go” Chicago White Sox American League championship season. Stuffed cover to cover with print articles and photographs, this keepsake boasts legends Nellie Fox, Luis Arapicio, and Al Lopez, along with the rest of the squad. The best features are four pages affixed with (17) 1958 Topps All-Star baseball cards, including Fox, Aparicio, Eddie Mathews, Frank Robison, Stan Musial, and Willie Mays. Another highlight, is a page with (3) PM10 pins, with Aparicio, Fox, and Billy Pierce. The pages are somewhat brittle, and the edges show varying degrees on chipping, while the clippings retain pleasing integrity. Also noted are some empty spaces with items removed.

Finishing off this offering is a second store-bought scrapbook, crammed with photographs of baseball stars, boxers, athletes from other sports, and comic strip super-hero the Phantom. Condition is akin to the other store-bought scrapbook, but with a more advanced case of edge chipping, and more removals. Some of the many greats pictured are Joe Louis, Joe DiMaggio, John Henry Lewis, Rick Ferrell, “Dizzy” Dean, Tony Lazzeri, Jimmie Foxx, Don Budge, Cecil Travis, and Max Schmeling.
