Amid all the ensuing fanfare surrounding the Baltimore Colts second consecutive NFL championship win in 1959, head coach Weeb Ewbank was presented with this championship game goal post relic plaque. In a rematch of their 1958 triumph over the New York Giants, the Colts were trailing 9-7 after the third quarter of the 1959 NFL Championship Game. They won in dramatic fashion, outscoring the Giants 24-7 in the fourth quarter, to cement their legacy as one of the NFL's greatest teams. Sized at 9" x 12-1/2", this wood plaque is adorned with an engraved brass scroll plate that reads "Authentic Piece Of The Goal Post, Colt Giant Championship Game 1959, Presented To Weeb Ewbank, Inspired By The Happy Colt Fans Of Baltimore, Designed By Nelson Coleman, Presented By C. Markland Kelly Jr. Post, 5-20-1960". Located at top-left over a gilded leaf accent, is an authentic 1-3/8" x 2-1/4" section of one of the goal posts stationed at Baltimore's Memorial Stadium during the 1959 NFL Championship Game.
The C. Markland Kelly Jr. Post was established to honor the the son of former Baltimore City Council President C. Markland Kelly Sr., who gave his life in defense of freedom, as a Naval aviator at the Battle of Midway, during WWII.
