1981 AL batting champion Carney Lansford joined the Oakland Athletics in 1983. It was not unusual then for Jerseys to be repurposed as Charles O. Finley's team was notoriously cheap. This jersey was used for a few games in 1981 by backup catcher Tim Hosley. When Lansford arrived in 1983, he was given this jersey for spring training. From the Phil Wood LOA that details the unique history of this jersey: “That Carney Lansford was a former batting champion and All Star didn't make him immune from wearing a previously used uniform.” The Oakland A's home white jersey #4, size 44 by Wilson, is a pullover v-neck style. Lansford and #4 are represented on the reverse. It has numerous stains on the front and back and shows clear evidence of the number and player being removed and replaced. The right shirttail features a beautifully scripted Carney Lansford autograph (“8”). Auction LOA from James Spence/JSA. Opening Bid $200.
