We're now arriving at the ground floor for the Baltimore Orioles, with the presentation of this 1954 team-signed OAL/Harridge baseball. The Orioles had just landed in Baltimore in 1954, having been known as the St. Louis Browns for the previous fifty-two seasons. Several seriously tough signatures from long-deceased members of this team, make this period signed baseball a highly desirable collecting prize, including murder victim Howie Fox, attempted murder victim Eddie "The Natural" Waitkus, the always ready to brawl Clint Courtney, and manager Jimmie Dykes. Other notables are Don Larsen, Frank Kellert, Chico Garcia, Jim Brideweser, Bobby Young, and Bob Turley.
The list of signers is:
Sweet spot: Jim Fridley, Jimmie Dykes (manager, d.1976);
North panel: undetermined, Howie Fox (d.1955), Chico Garcia, Joe Coleman, Mike Blyzka, Billy Hunter, Tom Oliver (coach), Lou Kretlow;
South panel: Jim Brideweser, Joe Durham, Ray Murray, Dick Kryhoski, Cal Abrams, Bobby Young;
East panel: Gil Coan, Bob Turley, Billy O'Dell, Bob Kuzava, Don Larsen, Harry Brecheen (coach), Eddie Waitkus (d.1972), Clint Courtney (d.1975);
West panel: Chuck Diering, Bob Chakales, Bob Kennedy, Ryne Duren, Cliff Melton, Frank Kellert (d.1976).
