Lot # 1864: 1964 Joseph Corcoran Signed Baltimore Colts vs. Chicago Bears Original Watercolor Artwork in Framed Display

It’s anchors away for the Baltimore Colts, with the presentation of this 1964 original artwork by Joseph B. Corcoran Jr. Framed to overall dimensions of 25” x 29”, Corcoran’s humorous depiction is a 20” x 24” watercolor on board original creation, that sees a Colts player dropping his untethered anchor on the head of sinking Chicago Bears mascot. A prophetic “NFL Championship” legend over a rising sun behind the Colts player proved accurate, as Baltimore made it all the way to the NFL championship game, where they were finally stopped by Jim Brown and the Cleveland Browns.

A fantastic example of a time when illustrators commonly poked fun at opposing teams for program, newspaper and magazine publication, this vintage piece is prominently captioned at bottom-left with the score “Colts 40, Bears 24”, the result of a contest that took place on November 8th at Wrigley Field. Corcoran has signed prominently at the bottom-right corner, and this arresting artwork presents handsomely with fantastic graphics.

 The Colts boasted a high-powered offense led by quarterback Johnny Unitas and head coach Don Shula, and the score for this game is indicative of the hurting they put on most of the opponents during a 12-2 campaign. Artist Cocoran, who died in 1968 at the age of 42, is best known for having created illustrations for the Baltimore Sun.
