Description

A nostalgic slice of Americana is plated up, with the presentation of this 1929 Griffith Stadium panoramic photograph featuring sitting president Herbert Hoover. The "Roaring '20s" were coming to an end, and It was still a couple of months before the Wall Street Crash of 1929 would set off the Great Depression, so Hoover and company were feeling pretty good when this photograph was taken. The caption at bottom-center reads "President Hoover at Opening Eastern Trials American Legion Junior Base Ball Teams Competitions, Washington D.C. Aug. 20, 1929". Given the nature of the event, it's a good bet that there aren't many examples of this photograph still in existence. Hoover is seen seated in a box at center, with patriotic bunting draped across the front, and the genetleman seated next to him appears to be Washington Senators owner Clark Griffith. The day's competing squads are arrayed on either side of the president's box, with the youth team on the left wearing Uniontown, PA uniforms, while the Ashville, NC team on the right is seen in uniforms without lettering. The photograph is somewhat rippled, and a considerable number of small surface abrasions are noted. Despite these conditions, this 32" x 11" display remains appealing, with a great look of period authenticity.
