America was still in the process of being settled one tract at a time, when President James Monroe signed the offered land grant in 1823. Headed with the legend “The United States of America", this two hundred year-old decree was made to Edward Saltz of Jackson County, Ohio, for a parcel of land in Chillicothe, Ohio. Dated September 4, 1823, this Land Grant No. 179 is dual-signed by President James Monroe, and the Commissioner of the General Land Office, George Graham. Monroe’s signature is distinct, while Graham’s is somewhat faded. Thanks to the sturdy nature of this antique vellum document, it remains attractive, with fully discernible content.
