Lot # 1564: Vintage Honus Wagner 18" Bust Plus Frank Vittor Sketches & Ephemera

If you’re looking for someone to bring you the head of Honus Wagner, you’ve come to the right place. There’s nothing barbaric in this case, as the offered head is a vintage 18” sculpted plaster bust. A faithful rendering in life-size format, this fine art sculpture is instantly recognizable as the “Flying Dutchman” right down to the high collar, and for good measure the name “Honus Wagner” is impressed into front of the base. No artist signature has been detected, but high praise is deserved by the sculptor, who has done a fine job with this creation. Two large breaks are noted on the collar and base, and there are a good number of smaller surface chips. Despite these conditions, this vintage bust retains abundant appeal.

Accompanying are several sketches of Wagner attributed to Frank Vittor, along with a circa 1950s postcard of the Wagner statue by Vittor, that originally stood outside of Forbes Field, before being relocated to Three Rivers Stadium and eventually PNC Park. No claim is made regarding the creation of the sketches being related to the Vittor statue, however one sheet with four images facing skyward is a reasonable candidate. Also present is a sign touting “Models of Statue of the Great Pirate  Baseball Immortal Honus Wagner by Sculptor Frank Vittor.
