A dynamic pivot in comic book history occurred with the publication of this 8/49 Timely Comics Marvel Tales #93 issue. With this Golden Age key issue, Timely rebranded its first ever comic book title, Marvel Mystery Comics, which had hit the newsstands in 1939. Marvel Mystery Comics introduced readers to iconic heroes the Human Torch, and Namor the Sub-Mariner. Also making appearances in this seminal title, were Captain America, Angel, Vision, and plenty of others from the Timely catalog.
After WWII ended, super-heroes waned in popularity, and the writing was on the wall. Timely reacted not only with a title change, but also with content change. This Marvel Tales #93 was the first issue in the run to focus on horror-themed stories, a strategy that continued until the title was ended in 1957. Fronted with a mesmerizing cover by Martin Nodell, this comic has just returned from grading submission after decades of seclusion in the hands of a dedicated collector. CGC has seen fit to rate this decent example 4.0, Cream to Off-White Pages. Label notes are "Gene Colan art, Martin Nodell cover. 1st issue. Numbering continued from Marvel Mystery Comics #92.".
