Description

Cincinnati Reds payroll check issued to manager Pat Moran during the 1920 season in the amount of $662.50. Drawn on the Fifth-Third National Bank of Cincinnati and signed by the team's treasurer, the check is endorsed by Moran on the reverse and features a number of bank related stamps and cancellation marks. The check displays five vertical folds as well as discoloration along the edges and tiny remnants of clear tape along the top edge from having once been mounted within a display. Notably, Moran was the manager of the famed 1919 World Championship team, which defeated the Chicago White Sox amid the "Black Sox" scandal to win the franchise's first title. He died in 1924, making this is a tough signature for Reds collectors. This is one of an exceptional grouping of scarce 1920 Reds payroll checks offered within this auction. Auction LOA from James Spence/JSA.
