In a watershed moment in both boxing history and American race relations, the stakes were high for the 1910 Jack Johnson vs. Jim Jeffries "Fight of the Century." The younger Jack Johnson imposed his physical will on the veteran Jeffries as the latter "threw in the towel" after being knocked down twice. What ensued were nationwide race riots in which several died. The offered news service photo of the 1910 bout was reissued in 1946. The nearly 6-7/8 x 8-1/4" displays riveting in-ring action with only moderate surface creasing to the glossy black-and-white finish. A dated back stamp and fight notation is placed on the reverse.
