Graded VG/EX+ 4.5 by SGC. The mustachioed "Boston Strong Boy" looks quite regal on this 1890s "Champion of the World" cabinet published by M.S. Spayd of Reading, Pennsylvania. The last of the "bare-knuckle" champions, the legendary John L. Sullivan won the heavyweight boxing title in his eleventh professional bout in 1882 against Paddy Ryan and remained champion for a decade before going down in his final fight versus James J. Corbett in 1892. As one of several Sullivan cabinet types, this crease-free portrait captures the distinguished champion in "picture perfect" clarity that is framed by only superficial corner/edge wear. The reverse which advertises M.S. Spayd as "The Largest Cigar House in the City" displays pitch black adverting text. Showing pleasing gloss, the photo image remains clear right down to the great gladiator's unmistakable handlebar mustache. An incredible nineteenth century artifact from a pivotal time in the sport's development.
