From his living room in a Maryland suburb of Washington, D.C., Joe Boyd (Tab Hunter) could only lament as his beloved Senators struggled in their hopeless pursuit of those Bronx Bombers. In a deal with the Devil (Ray Walston), Boyd becomes a youthful Joe “Hardy” and powers the Senators to prominence. Such are the fantastic plot twists in the late-1950s film adaptation of the Broadway musical, “Damn Yankees,” that made a star of Gwen Verdon as “Lola.”
This Washington Senators home jersey was used in that award winning production features proper “Wilson” tagging and identifiers found on the club’s actual gamers. The cream-colored flannel zippered garment features a blue pinstripe pattern, a “W” sewn to the left breast in blue-on-white-on-red felt and “67” sewn to the back in like fashion. This particular style features overlapping layers to give a 3-D effect and was used only from 1956-1958. The tapered left front tail is home to a “Tim McAuliffe” size “36” label. While the jersey is tailored to Major League specifications, a telltale sign of its use in “Damn Yankees” is the material used on the “W” and “67” identifiers. Senators’ gamers featured twill-on-felt, not the all-felt decorations found here. The all-original garment shows moderate wear.
