Description

The Barry Halper Collection is the most famous in memorabilia history. Sotheby's sold it in 2000. This lot of (6) signed items by underrated Hall of Famer, Max Carey, is from that storied auction. A Property Certificate from sothebys.amazon.com accompanies the items. Signatures average ("7-9"). They include:

(2) Handwritten Letters with interesting content. The first, on attractive “Miami Baseball & Athletic Training School Inc.” letterhead noting Jimmie Foxx as 1st VP and Max Carey as the current President-Treasurer, is dated May 4th, 1936 and comes with a typewritten reply dated May 6th, 1936.

The second letter is from 1972 when he was 82 years old. In the letter, he turns down an offer to sign items and cards, citing his arthritis (perhaps why his signature is scarcer). The P.S. to the letter says “My stuff is in Cooperstown.” Indeed, his 738 stolen bases are still #9 on the all-time list.

Also includes:

Glossy photo (8x10) signed in black sharpie.

Photo postcard (5 3/8 x 3 1/2) signed in ink.

4 7/8 x 5 photo of Carson Bigsbee, Max Carey and Clyde Barnhart signed by Carey and Barnhart.

1961 Fleer baseball card signed in pencil.

Auction LOA from James Spence/JSA.
