These (9) pieces of correspondence with players from the Negro Leagues, collected in the 1980s, are on note paper ranging in size from 5” in length to 6x9. The ballpoint letters are in Excellent or better condition and feature nice (“8-9”) signatures.
These were requests a collector sent with cards to sign, and the signed notes were a bonus.
They include:
Reply “From the Desk of Josh Johnson” of December 19, 1985, with a nice note signed, “Sincerely, Josh Johnson.”
September 3, 1986, response letter addressed “Dear David” and signed “Sincerely, Bill (Ready) Cash.”
A response letter from Sy Morton explaining how he was a teammate of Ray Dandridge in 1944. Signed “Yours truly, Sy Morton.”
A response letter that mentions Satchel Paige sign “Thanks for your letter, Art “Superman” Pennington.”
A short note with holiday greetings signed “Ziggy Marcel.”
10/27/86 response on Union Pacific notepad paper signed, “Yours in Sport, Marlin Carter.”
1/2/86 response note signed, “Yours in Sports, Mahlon Duckett (Phila. Stars).”
12/6/86 request letter from the collector to George Giles, explaining his interest in the Negro Leagues. His reply is written on the bottom of the back, and is signed, “Sending appreciations and best wishes, Geo. Giles.”
8/18/89 request letter on the collector’s card/stationery to Hall of Famer Buck Leonard asking who he favors for the next Negro Leaguer in the Hall of Fame saying, “Monte Irvin says Bullet Joe Williams & Leon Day.” Leonard has replied on the back, “I favor Joe Williams Thanks.”
