Non-sport card enthusiasts make a nice score with this 1935 R48-2 Gum Inc. Film Funnies actor name on front variety complete set of 24. This humorous series challenged collectors of the day to discern the correct response from a list of five answers on the card back, after examining the clues and question on the front. This series was issued in two versions, with either the actor's name or the question "Can you tell?" printed on the bottom border of the card fronts. All 24 cards in this set are the "What did the actor say?" type. Printed on heavy stock, these antique cards have held up surprisingly well given their considerable age, ranging EX to NM in condition, with deference to varying degrees of toning, ranging from negligible to moderate.
The subjects seen in the illustrations were among Hollywood's leading stars of the day, with: #1 W. C. Fields, #2 Oliver Hardy, #3 Jimmy Durante, #4 Jackie Cooper, #5 Chico Marx, #6 Jimmy Cagney, #7 Polly Moran, #8 Bob Woolsey, #9 Joe E. Brown, #10 Charles Laughton, #11 Myrna Loy, #12 Greta Garbo, #13 Mae West, #14 Farina, #15 Jack Oakie, #16 Edmund Lowe, #17 Maurice Chevalier, #18 Slim Summerville, #19 Fredric March, #20 Jimmy Dunn, #21 Clark Gable, #22 Bing Crosby, #23 Eddie Cantor, and #24 George Arliss.
