The Fantastic Four may have come first but Spider-Man turned out to be the best. Mark your friendly neighborhood Spider-Man's debut with this 1962 Marvel Amazing Fantasy #15 comic book. Superheroes had fallen out of favor after World War II. The Silver Age dawned when DC offered a new Flash in 1956. The next big leaps back into the superhero genre came in 1960 and 1961 respectively, when DC's Justice League of America and Marvel's Fantastic Four appeared on the scene. The Fantastic Four blew up the traditional costumed hero realm, with a loving family that fights together, while also bickering and facing ordinary problems. Living in the public eye, without secret identities, this game-changing team redefined the superhero genre and opened the doors to a parade of new Marvel characters.
The biggest attraction to emerge from this comic book renaissance is Spider-Man, who made his first appearance in the pages of this Amazing Fantasy issue. Spidey and his teen angst clicked immediately with young readers, and he soon graduated from the Amazing Fantasy anthology series to his own solo title in 1963. Since then, the web-headed wonder has spawned countless related titles, and he has also appeared in numerous live action and animated films and television shows, generating all manner of merchandise in the process, as Marvel's No. 1 attraction. Spider-Man's tremendous run of success has made this debut issue a permanent fixture on every list of Top Silver Age Comics.
