Behold a thing of great beauty with this 1883 P. Lorillard & Co. Tin Tag tobacco countertop display cabinet. A marvel of preservation showing light to moderate wear, this antique wood cabinet presents very handsomely, with fantastic period authentic appeal.
Sized at 34-1/2” wide x 43” high x 19” deep, this stately retail display piece is fronted with two glass doors above two wood drawers. Elegant brass hinges are attached to the sides of the doors, fastened with slotted flat head screws, and ball head studs. The drawer pulls and door locks are also brass, and one key is included for the properly locking doors. Insets at top with gold lettering proclaim the brand “P. Lorillard & Co.” at center, flanked by the company’s founding date “1760” at left, and the cabinet’s origin date “1883” at right. The glass doors are etched on the inside, with “Lorillard’s” on the left, and “Tin Tag” on the right, as you face them. Two shelves provide ample interior storage space, and lighting fixtures have been added for dramatic effect, with a hole for the cords cut through the center of the back panel. A pair of wall-mount metal brackets have also been added at rear on the top. A careful examination of this piece reveals the outstanding craftsmanship that went into the making, with high-quality details at every point. Perhaps the most dynamic design feature is a pair of carved scrolls perched atop either side of the header.
Historically, Lorillard was one of the earliest tobacco companies located in America, founded while the original 13 colonies were still under the British flag. Lorillard was one of the first tobacco companies to offer collectible trading cards as premiums with its products and was also one of the first companies to produce decorative tin tags. These tags were also intended as premiums, but even more so to prevent lower-priced products from being unscrupulously passed off as genuine Lorillard brands. For the connoisseur who desires a crowning touch for the ultimate tobacciana collection, this 19th century treasure is truly a fantastic find.
