The last of the Whig Party U.S. Presidents, Millard Fillmore took power after the passing of Zachary Taylor and met with opposition because of his views on slavery. Fillmore’s autograph, meanwhile, is considered a tougher Oval Office souvenir and has been executed on this hardcover book. Entitled Vestiges of the Spirit – History of Man, the volume is signed by Fillmore on the inside front cover in black ink (“6” strength, inscribed “July 6, 1859”). LOA from John Reznikoff, University Archive. This item has a reserve (estimated value $500-$1500). More on our website.

Written by S.F. Dunlap and published in 1858 (404pp; New York, D. Appleton and Company), the book presents in Good condition with evidence of rubbing on the green cloth covers and gilt lettering on the spine. The inside front cover and fly leaf are lightly (rectangularly) soiled. A few small sections have loosed from the spine, possibly resulting upon the publisher’s three-line addendum in the right margin of page 209.

The following notations have been penned in Fillmore’s hand:
title page “G-3” (book location on his library shelf)
(P5) “Domestic gods”
(p7) “Spirits of the defeated”
(p109) drawn hand pointing to “Ariel” which he’s underlined
(p216) drawn hand pointing to reference of Zoroastrian religion and notation of “Why the 3rd?”
