In 1975, Dr. James Beckett earned a PhD in Statistics. As an associate professor at Bowling Green State University, he began preparing price guides for baseball cards which he offered free upon request. The first issue of Beckett Monthly was published in 1984 for $2.50. At that time the 1952 Topps Mickey Mantle listed for $1,200 - $1,400.
