Hall of Fame backstop Mickey Cochrane answered a fan's autograph request, with this 1931 typed letter signed. A lifetime .320 hitter and 2X AL MVP, "Black Mike" anchored Connie's Mack last great A's dynasty, which made three consecutive trips to the World Series from 1929-1931, with championship wins in 1929 and 1930. After a typical Mack fire sale, Cochrane wound up with the Detroit Tigers, as their player-manager. His fiery spirit paid off big time, as he led the Tigers to back-to-back Fall Classic appearances in 1934-1935, with a championship in 1935. The accompanying original envelope is postmark dated 9/21/31, when the Athletics were gearing up for the World Series, as they had easily locked up the AL pennant, with just four games to go in the season. Cochrane explains his brief letter to fan Harold Sharon of Oneida, NY., with the passage "Am very busy now and have a lot of letters to write". Cochrane also states "I am very glad to hear that you are pulling for our club to win the series this year. Most of the players are pretty busy now, with tickets etc. so they do not have much time to answer fan mail.". Cochrane's correspondence concludes with an ("8") strength signature. Despite multiple folds, the letter's content remains clearly legible, and a paper copy of his 1934 Diamond Stars card has been affixed below his signature. Also included is a 5x7 game action photo of Cochrane. Auction LOA from James Spence/JSA. Opening Bid $150.
