Score a nice little slice of U.S. Military history, with this William McKinley signed military appointment. This document marks the appointment of William H. Butler to the rank of First Lieutenant with the 49th Regiment of Infantry, U.S. Volunteers, an African -American regiment deployed during the 1899-1902 Philippine–American War. As noted in the body of the content, this appointment was made on 9/9/1899, and as dated at top left, the document was filed by the Adjutant General on 1/15/1900.

25th President William McKinley (d.1901) has signed at lower right, and his stately signature still registers a ("7-8") degree of strength. Counter-signers are sitting Secretary of War Elihu Root ("7", d.1937) at lower left; and Adjutant General H.C. Corbin ("8", d.1909) at upper left. Measuring 16 x 17-1/2", this antique document has obviously been trimmed across the top and bottom, as the last three letters of Corbin's signature are cut off at the top, and the bottom edge is moderately irregular. Despite overall creasing, the parchment remains fairly crisp, and the overall presentation is pleasing, with great period authenticity. Full photo LOA from JSA.
