When it comes to our military, the thinking is often why do something once, when you can do it twice. Here have the second of two different William McKinley signed military appointments, commissioning William H. Butler to the rank of First Lieutenant with the 49th Regiment of Infantry, U.S. Volunteers, an African-American regiment deployed during the 1899-1902 Philippine–American War. Written in on the appropriate lines of the body, is the date of the appointment, 9/9/1899. A notation at top left indicates it was filed at the Adjutant General's office on 9/19/1899. This crisp parchment is sized at 17-1/2 x 16", and despite somewhat irregular edges, it still presents handsomely.

Sitting President McKinley (d.1901) has signed at lower right, and his ancient signature remains a firm ("7-8") example. Counter-signers are Secretary of War Elihu Root ("7", d.1937), and Adjutant General H.C. Corbin ("8-9", d.1909). Full photo LOA from JSA.

This is one of two military appointments for William H. Butler, that are available in our current auction. The other document can be viewed in our Americana, Coins, Comics, Historical Memorabilia/Presidential Autographs & Memorabilia category.
