Many baseball stars have enjoyed great playing careers over the years, and many managers have posted big win totals. Few have excelled both on the field and on the bench as well as Fred Clarke (d.1960). Elected to the Hall of Fame in 1945, Clarke posted a .312 lifetime batting average and a .576 win percentage, while serving as player-manager for the Louisville Colonels and Pittsburgh Pirates from 1894-1915. Bank an important, long deceased Hall of Famer autograph, with this Clarke signed check. Drawn on the First National Bank of Winfield, Kansas, where Clarke resided at the "Little Pirate Ranch", this pleasing payment voucher is dated 9/2/42. As he did on the diamond, Clarke turned in an "A" effort in the signing of this check, with a bold ("9-10") strength fountain pen endorsement at bottom right. Made payable to "Skelly Oil Co.", this vintage check is crisp and clean, with deference to vertical compacting folds that have minimal impact on display appeal. Full photo LOA from JSA.
