During an early meeting of American Football League executives, charter owner Harry Wismer named his franchise the New York Titans, stating "Titans are bigger and stronger than Giants". This quote was in reference to the long standing New York Giants NFL team, with whom his team would vie for fan attention. The upstart Titans played under that name for their first two seasons and then switched the team name to the Jets in 1963.
