War of 1812 veteran Lawrence Swiney sired eight sons, all of whom served in the Union Army during the Civil War. Presented is a c.1890-1910 Swiney and Sons photo, that was apparently a fairly popular item during its original period of issue for its incredible story. Mounted in cabinet photo style is a 14x11 board with nine individual portrait images of the patriotic Swiney men.
Lawrence Swiney Sr. takes the place of honor in a square cut photo located at top center. His eight sons are artfully arranged in rows of five and three oval portraits, with from left to right, upper row: John, Lawrence Jr, Steven, Truman and William; and lower row: Alpheus, Alfred and John. Lawrence Sr's photo is flanked by his name on the left and "Veteran of 1812" on the right. Written at bottom left is "Eight Sons of Lawrence Swiney of Starksboro, Vt., in the Union Army during the War of the Rebellion, 1861 to 1865", followed by the printed name of photography studio "Ingham, Vergennes, Vt.".
Typically photo boards of this type, size and age show considerable signs of wear and age. Not so in this case, as this striking piece shows moderate corner chipping/loss, but otherwise sports a generally fresh appearance, with distinct images against a clean black background making for nice contrast. Remarkably all of the nine men pictured survived their military service, though three of the sons were wounded, as noted below their portraits. Let this handsome group photo serve as a constant reminder of the many who have fought to preserve our freedom.
