While serving as Secretary of State, 15th U.S. President James Buchanan (d.1868) authored this full page handwritten letter. Dated 3/30/1847, this straightforward correspondence was sent to William H. Marriott at the Baltimore Customs office in regards to a package sent by the U.S. Minister to Rio de Janeiro. This antique document shows a visible area of 7x9 and is framed to overall dimensions of 15x17. Expected compacting folds are evident and a small stain affects the upper center area of the letter, however these conditions have no effect on Buchanan's prominent ("7-8") strength dip pen signature, located in the customary position at bottom right.
