Description

These historic New York Daily Mirror Staff Photos depict the Wednesday, September 27, 1950, bout at Yankee Stadium between Ezzard Charles and Joe Louis. Louis had defended his championship a record 25 consecutive times. He announced his retirement in 1949 but had to come back in 1950 because he still owed the IRS. Charles had become the champion while he was gone. The fight did not go well for the “Brown Bomber” as Charles defeated him in a 15 round decision. These 11x14 photos have newspaper pencil markings and stampings on the back. Some have the attached New York Mirror Staff Photo information sheet. Ten of the photos show the two boxers in action while one of the photos shows Louis after the fight with a bloodied, eye soaking his hand in ice. The photos average Very Good to VG-EX, some with light creasing.
