Description

In the teens, tobacco companies issued quite a few sets printed on silks or felts, featuring a variety of subjects. These "fabric cards" were intended to be used as the building blocks for quilts, pillow cases, blankets, tapestries, etc. The silks featuring baseball players are by far the most highly prized by collectors today. This large tapestry, which measures an impressive 18 x 17.5," was created using the S74 Baseball Silks issued in 1911. S74 silks are related to the T205 Gold Border series, and share the same basic player designs. Individually, they are very attractive collectibles. The silks have been meticulously sewn together, creating a unique work of folk art, which is presented in this beautifully framed display. There are (15) Hall of Famers among the (77) silks, including Ty Cobb and two Christy Mathewson examples. Other notables include: (2) Bender, (3) Bresnahan, Brown, Chance, (2) Clarke, (2) Marquard, and Tinker. The tapestry is in excellent condition overall. (The individually silks, if separated, would technically be modestly graded due to having been sewn together. Many silks have been seen with tiny sewing holes along their perimeters. They have been separated from tapestries such as this.) This is a very attractive display of these colorful tobacco premiums, which by any measure represent one of the very best values of all 1910-era baseball tobacco issues. Framed and matted to total dimensions of: 271/2 x 27". Frames included with lots: while we make every effort to protect the frames included in these lots during pre-auction storage and post-auction shipping, we are not responsible for any damage to the frames themselves, and no refunds will be given due to frame damage.
