Historically significant original fight poster heralding the bout between Muhammad Ali and Jerry Quarry at the Atlanta Municipal Auditorium on October 26, 1970. The poster featuring the artwork of LeRoy Nieman. The bout marked Ali's returned to the ring after a 3 ½ year exile following his defiant stance against being inducted into the armed forces. He was stripped of his heavyweight title and his boxing license revoked and shortly after that he was convicted of draft evasion and sentenced to five years in prison. Ali's lawyers appealed the case, and during the time of the appeal, Ali was free on bond and free to meet Quarry in the ring. Public opinion had softened and many people now supported Ali, as a result the city of Atlanta granted him a boxing license. Ali is listed on the poster as undefeated champion despite the lack of title belt and Quarry as the number one contender. It would have been hard not to recognize Ali as champion given the easy win over Quarry in three rounds.
The rare poster is 14x22 and displays three small areas of staining along the left border, easily matted out, and very minor toning along the border areas with a tiny crease in the area of Quarry’s image. Excellent condition overall.
