Description

Treasure seekers stop here, for this silver coin recovered from the 1622 wreck of the Spanish ship Nuestra Señora de Atocha. Laden with gold, silver, gems, tobacco and other valuable cargo, the Atocha went down off the Florida Keys after hitting a reef during a vicious storm. This notable shipwreck is reported to have claimed two hundred and sixty lives, along with its vast treasure. As stated on the accompanying LOA, the offered coin was part of the recovery made by Treasure Salvors, Inc. on July 20, 1985.

After more than three hundred years at the bottom of the sea, this ancient coin retains sufficient detail quality for positive identification. The LOA cites the denomination as 8 Reale, the mint location as Potosi, the weight as 20.3 grams, and the reign of origin as Philip III. Also cited is a grade of 4, along with details regarding the irregular shape of this hand-struck coin.

It would appear the obverse side of the coin bearing the representation of the Hapsburg Shield was facing down in the ocean, as this side shows much stronger details than the reverse, which was exposed to the salt water for centuries. Romance surrounding coins from the period of New World colonization runs deeper than the waters that covered the coin all those long years, and here's your chance to hold a bit of history in the palm of your hand.
