Description

Graded GOOD 2 by SGC. Extremely rare variation of Ty Cobb's "fielding" pose from the highly regarded 1907 A. C. Dietsche Detroit Tigers postcard set. This issue was produced by the Detroit company to commemorate the Tigers' participation in the 1907 World Series. The Class of 1936 Hall of Famer is the only player with two poses in the Dietsche set, and for uncertain reasons the Cobb fielding pose is far rarer than his batting pose, to such an extraordinary degree that we can only surmise that the Cobb fielding pose was replaced by the batting pose early in the print run. According to the most current population census, 69 total copies of the batting variation have been judged by the grading service in comparison to a scant 11 examples of the fielding variant. Of special note, this postcard is considered by many collectors to be Ty Cobb's true rookie card. The fact that the Dietsche postcard set features a short biography of the player on the back makes this postcard even more "card-like" than many more traditional issues. The card features a crisp black-and-white image of Cobb fielding, moderate corner wear and surface abrasions throughout. The reverse is problem-free. An outstanding example of this rare pose variation of what many collectors believe reasonably qualifies as Cobb's true rookie card!
