Lot # 1656: 1977 Wonder Bread Star Wars Complete High-Grade Set (16)

Take a thrilling tour of George Lucas' beloved Star Wars Galaxy, with this 1977 Wonder Bread Star Wars complete high-grade set (16). Printed by Topps, this black-bordered series was issued in packs of bread, with one card per package. That's a double-whammy for condition, with the black borders being as condition sensitive as it gets in the cardboard collectibles universe, and pliant food product packaging that often led to bent cards. In this case, condition is outstanding, ranging EX-MT to NM-MT, with vibrant colors, nice gloss, favorable centering, sharp corners, arctic white backs, and a generally pack-fresh appearance. Surprisingly, these prized cards bare neither Topps, nor Wonder Bread branding.

As the first "Star Wars: A New Hope" film was incredible success, all manor of merchandise soon showed up, including five Topps card/sticker series, a Burger King series, General Mills stickers, and this Wonder Bread series, and that's just the domestic mainstream market. While many collectors value the Topps blue borders first series card #1 as Luke Skywalker's rookie card, this famous issue pictures Luke in a Stormtrooper uniform. The Wonder Bread card #1 pictures Luke as a farmboy, yet to leave his home on Tatooine, and still ignorant of the Force. Other cherished characters making their first-year debut, are heroes Princess Leia, Han Solo, Obi-Wan Kenobi, C3PO, R2D2, and Chewbacca, and villains Darth Vader, Grand Moff Tarken, Stormtroopers, a Tusken Raider, and a Jawa.
