One of the earliest U.S. coins hits the block, with this 1798 Draped Bust 2nd Hair variety large cent. Struck during the first decade of U.S. coin production six years after the Coinage Act of 1792 was passed, this Federal Era issue has an estimated survival population of just 5,000 pieces in all grades, and a Numismatic Rarity score of R-4.0, making this a fairly tough date-variety. Uncirculated examples are nearly impossible to find, and high grade examples come with astronomical price tags. Though reported as having been burnished, this centuries-old coin is still appealing, showing VF details, and it fits comfortably in the affordable range.
